Edna Ullmann-Margalit Memorial Lecture - "Are Democracies in Crisis?"

Abstract: Something big is happening. In many Western European countries, party systems ossified for almost 100 years are crumbling, while in the United States the traditional center-right party was taken over by extremists. Political polarization is increasing sharply and so is political hostility. The causes may be economic, cultural, or autonomously political, but causality is difficult to identify. I compare the current conditions to those of entrenched democracies that fell or survived in the past and attempt to draw lessons from history.
