Edna Ullmann-Margalit Memorial Lecture - "Are Democracies in Crisis?"

Abstract: Something big is happening. In many Western European countries, partysystems ossified for almost 100 years are crumbling, while in the United States thetraditional center-right party was taken over by extremists. Political polarization isincreasing sharply and so is political hostility. The causes may be economic, cultural, orautonomously political, but causality is difficult to identify. I compare the currentconditions to those of entrenched democracies that fell or survived in the past andattempt to draw lessons from history.
